Legendary memes and templates

Some memes are one-offs, while some start a whole new craze and become well known templates, getting modified and re-used countless times.

Creators of the latter ones are those hurt the most by Web 2.0 meme culture. We all know Doge, Sitting Bernie, and Pointing Spiderman, we’ve seen hundreds of different takes on the same picture. But we have no idea who made the original ones.

With Openmeme’s Legendary Meme system, we believe that we can fix it. When a meme submitted to our platform is reused a certain number of times, it becomes a Legendary Meme. On top of getting a super fancy border around it, it also becomes a Meme Template, which means that every time this template is used to make a new meme, the original creator gets royalties. The same applies to trading - every time a meme built on a template is traded, the template’s creator gets a cut of the transaction.
